AndaSeat Positions Xtreme Series Around Clearer Work Zones as Visual Load Gains New Research Attention

The company is placing particular focus on the Xtreme Series standing desk and an increasingly relevant workstation question: how much unnecessary visual and physical information is competing for space around the worker before a task even begins?

A systematic review published in Ergonomics in June 2026 examined 119 studies addressing “visual load,” a concept the authors found had been defined inconsistently across research. The review proposed understanding visual load as the total visual-processing demand placed on an individual across perception, cognition and response. Only 12 of the 119 studies reviewed had explicitly defined the term, highlighting the need for a clearer framework when discussing visually demanding environments.
The research did not study desks, cable management or AndaSeat products, and it does not establish that a visually cleaner desk automatically improves cognitive performance. It does, however, reflect growing attention to how much information people must process within visually intensive tasks.
For physical computer workstations, OSHA identifies a related but more concrete issue. Its guidance states that limited work-surface space can force computer components into undesirable positions, while clutter below a desk can reduce clearance for the legs and prevent a chair from moving into an appropriate working position.

The Desk Is More Than a Surface Under the Computer

A modern computer workstation can contain a monitor, laptop, keyboard, mouse, speakers, mobile devices, charging equipment, headphones, controllers, notebooks and other task-specific tools.
The ergonomic problem is not simply the number of objects present. It is whether frequently used equipment can remain in an appropriate working zone.
OSHA recommends that the monitor, keyboard and input device have sufficient work-surface space and that frequently used items remain directly in front of or within easy reach of the user. It also recommends enough desk depth to position a monitor at least 20 inches away and additional space when documents or other work materials are required.
When the usable surface becomes crowded, equipment may move outward rather than the desk becoming larger. A mouse may be pushed farther to the side, printed material may cover the keyboard area, or a monitor may be positioned at an angle simply because another device occupies its preferred location.
The Xtreme Series approaches this issue through several desktop configurations rather than treating the work surface as a fixed-size platform.
Available Xtreme configurations use 18 mm MDF desktops, with dimensions designed to cover compact and larger computer setups. The matte surface is intended to reduce strong reflections, while the uninterrupted work area provides room to organize equipment according to the task rather than around decorative structures built into the desk.


Cable Management Becomes Part of Spatial Management

Cables are often discussed primarily as an aesthetic issue.
On a height-adjustable workstation, they also occupy physical space and need to move.
Xtreme routes insulated power cabling through the desk’s left leg and incorporates a steel tray beneath the work surface for power strips and excess cable length. The tray uses an open-side structure so connections remain accessible while keeping much of the cable volume away from the active desktop.
This changes the role of cable management from decoration to spatial infrastructure.
A bundle of cables stored on the floor or directly beneath the user can compete with foot and chair movement. A cable routed too tightly may also become stressed when the desk changes height.
OSHA specifically advises keeping under-desk clearance free from CPUs, books, files and other stored objects that restrict movement. Its workstation guidance notes that inadequate clearance can lead users to sit farther away from their computer equipment and reach toward the work surface.
Xtreme does not remove the need for users to select appropriate cable lengths or follow electrical-equipment instructions. The integrated routing system instead creates a defined location for wiring that might otherwise occupy the same space needed by the worker.


Height Adjustment Changes the Work Zone Without Rebuilding It

Xtreme provides electric height adjustment from 28.7 to 46.1 inches.
The system moves at 22 mm per second and operates at a company-rated noise level below 50 dB. A digital control panel includes three memory presets and a real-time height display.
The importance of those controls in this release is not simply the ability to stand.
A work zone that has already been organized around a keyboard, mouse, monitor and other frequently used objects can move vertically as one platform. The user does not need to clear the desk or rebuild equipment placement before every change in height.
OSHA’s purchasing guidance recommends height-adjustable work surfaces and states that keyboard height should generally correspond with elbow height. Its guidance also treats adjustability between seated and standing working levels as desirable.
Xtreme’s three memory positions allow repeatable surface heights to be stored rather than manually rediscovered. An adjustable sedentary reminder can also be configured from 0.5 to four hours.
Neither feature establishes an ideal schedule for sitting or standing. They provide controls that allow the physical workstation to be changed without requiring a new equipment arrangement each time.


Stability Protects the Layout After the Desk Moves

Organizing a workstation has limited value if the work surface becomes unstable after its height changes.
Xtreme uses a cold-formed steel T-frame built around dual support beams, extended side brackets, two-stage legs and wide feet. AndaSeat developed these components to address side-to-side and front-to-back movement during activities such as typing and mouse use.
The desk supports loads up to 70 kg, including the desktop and installed equipment, and provides an anti-collision function that stops and reverses movement when resistance is detected.
The digital control panel also includes a child-lock function for environments where unintended activation may be a concern.
These features address a different part of workspace organization: once devices have been placed in useful positions, the supporting platform should remain predictable while operating within its intended range.
A monitor, keyboard or drawing device that changes position because the desk surface moves excessively can force the user to repeatedly correct equipment placement.

Labor Day Expands the Ergonomics Conversation Beyond Sitting

Workplace ergonomics is often reduced to discussions of chairs, posture and sitting time. Those issues remain important, but the work surface itself also determines where equipment, hands, legs and visual information are positioned.
The 2026 systematic review of visual load provides a useful reminder that visually intensive work involves demands across perception, cognition and response. It does not demonstrate that a particular desk configuration reduces those demands, but it reinforces the importance of treating visual environments carefully rather than assuming more information and equipment can be added without consequence.
OSHA provides the more direct workstation link: insufficient surface area and under-desk clutter can push equipment and the user away from preferred working positions.
