GREENSBORO, NC, UNITED STATES, September 3, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Founder Observatory Introduces New Theory of Founder Role Exit and Post Liquidity Decision Risk

New working paper challenges the assumption that a successful transaction automatically produces a successful founder transition

Founder Observatory founder Jerome Myers has released a new conceptual paper examining what happens to business owners after liquidity events alter the roles, relationships, routines, and sources of meaning that shaped their lives.

The paper, “The Exit Expedition: A Temporal Theory of Founder Role Exit, Resource Reconfiguration, and Post Liquidity Decision Risk,” is now available through the Social Science Research Network.

Most exit planning models concentrate on preparing the company, completing the transaction, and managing the resulting wealth. Myers argues that this approach leaves a consequential part of the transition undertheorized: the founder’s departure from an identity organizing role.

“The transaction determines what the founder receives,” Myers said. “The descent reveals whether the founder was prepared to live with what the transaction changed.”

A theory of the founder’s transition through time

The Exit Expedition treats founder exit as a temporal process rather than a single transaction event. The paper explains how the loss or reduction of the founder role can disrupt six interconnected areas of life:

Identity
Purpose
Structure
Belonging
Agency
Stewardship

These resources are often embedded in the business and removed or weakened at approximately the same time. The resulting concentration of change can leave even financially successful founders vulnerable to disorientation, isolation, impulsive commitments, and avoidable decision risk.

The paper introduces the concept of the Depletion Window, the period during which role embedded resources have declined but replacement structures have not yet stabilized. Myers proposes that major irreversible decisions made during this period may carry elevated risk, even when the founder has substantial financial resources and completed the transaction voluntarily.

“Financial readiness and transition readiness are not the same thing,” Myers said. “A founder may be thoroughly prepared to sell the company and still be unprepared for the life that follows.”

Connecting practice with scholarship

The conceptual framework integrates research from entrepreneurship, organizational behavior, identity theory, role exit, conservation of resources, liminality, decision science, and life transition scholarship.

The working paper contains 41 scholarly references and develops 10 propositions that can be tested through future longitudinal and empirical research. It also introduces Timing Discipline as a practical mechanism for delaying irreversible decisions while identity, relationships, routines, and purpose are being reconstructed.

The Exit Expedition does not argue that founders should avoid selling their companies. Instead, it proposes that advisors, researchers, families, and founders should treat the post transaction period as a distinct transition requiring preparation, observation, and support.

The theory also expands the meaning of exit readiness. Traditional readiness assessments tend to emphasize transferable enterprise value, financial independence, tax planning, and transaction execution. The Exit Expedition adds a founder centered question: What personal resources will disappear when the founder role ends, and how will those resources be replaced?

Implications for the exit planning field

The framework has potential implications for business owners, wealth advisors, exit planners, family offices, therapists, coaches, researchers, and other professionals who support founders before and after liquidity events.

Myers developed the theory after years of working with and listening to founders navigating the emotional and practical consequences of business ownership and exit. His work through Founder Observatory and Exit to Excellence focuses on the parts of the founder journey that conventional transaction models frequently overlook.

“The closing is visible, measurable, and celebrated,” Myers said. “The transition that follows is usually private. That is precisely why it deserves more serious study.”

The paper is presented as a conceptual working paper. Its propositions are intended to establish a foundation for scholarly discussion and future empirical testing. It should not be represented as peer reviewed research or as proof of population level outcomes.
