At the hotel’s Central Stair, living bonsai trees specially selected by BONSAI SADASYO to complement the space at Shiba Park Hotel are displayed year-round. The hotel hopes that international guests who encounter the beauty of bonsai cultivated over many years will be able to take home, as memories of their journey, both the time they spent admiring the bonsai and the lingering impressions of Japan. This vision of the hotel aligned with the philosophy shared by BONSAI SADASYO and JUME BONSAI of bringing the appeal of bonsai to people regardless of country or environment, leading to this collaboration.

Bonsai Art “SHOKEI” is a new form of bonsai art born from the vision of third-generation bonsai artist Daisuke Mariko, who seeks to share the appeal of bonsai regardless of country or environment. Living bonsai requires continuous care, including watering, adequate sunlight, temperature control, and pruning. Bringing living bonsai overseas also requires compliance with plant quarantine and import/export requirements, including necessary certificates and regulations concerning soil, pests, and plant diseases. In addition, long-distance transportation carries risks such as drying out, temperature fluctuations, and damage to branches and roots. For these reasons, delivering living bonsai as they are to people around the world is not easy.

To address these challenges, Mariko has reimagined the sculptural beauty that bonsai develops over many years as an art form that requires no ongoing care such as watering or pruning. Materials including Tosa washi paper are used. Taking advantage of the natural variations created by irregularly layered fibers, Mariko uses unique techniques to express gradations of light and shade, cracks reminiscent of weathering, and the dry, aged textures of moss and soil.

At the hotel, guests can experience both the living bonsai at the Central Stair and JUME BONSAI, which expresses their sculptural beauty in a new form. The individuality of each bonsai, gradually brought out over time, quietly resonates with the hotel itself, which has continued to weave its own history since opening. Through encounters with these two forms of bonsai, Shiba Park Hotel offers international guests a stay infused with Japanese culture, allowing them to take home not only the beauty of bonsai, but also the time and stories behind it as part of their memories of Japan.

Founded in 1948 as a hotel for foreign trade missions, Shiba Park Hotel has a history and tradition spanning decades. The hotel houses approximately 2,000 books selected by Ginza Tsutaya Books.
